Interesting narration technique and open mistery

What hit me the most about this book right away was the narration technique. The first chapter of the book is literally two pages, all spoken at present tense. Cohen is in front of his father's body, and is contemplating the body's absence of life. From then, the narrator brings the reader into a time capsule to observe Cohen's childhood.

Who killed Cohen's father?
