The book opens with Cohen stepping over his father's dead body. Cohen and his father had worked together and his father's death triggers memories. Cohen reflects on his father's days as a preacher and how his mother would actually write the sermons. He think about his sisters ability to stay still for long sermons and his need to move.

The tone of the book is reflective, and it shift from memory to present. The prose is in a passive voice. Personally I prefer a bit more activity.
