Change from Previous Novels
Before I discuss the premise, I would like to first discuss the voice. The book didn't seem to be in the same voice of the author's previous works and I believe that is due to the fact this book was co-authored which explains the change in style. For me, the first portion of the book seemed to be a bit slow, but I believe that is because the co-author and Wilbur's style differs some. Even so, the end was still a thrill ride, but I think it's still worth noting and while it was good, it was not my favorite.
Now, on to the book's description and plot summary. This book is a historical novel and serves as part of the Courtney series. Even though this is not a first in series, the story allows the reader to catch up and still works as a stand-alone. The book occurs post WW2, but still takes the reader on a journey that deals with issues such as racial tension as well as some serious situations that occur in the family.
I don't want to give away too many spoilers, but if you like historical thrillers, this is a good choice. If you are a fan of Wilbur Smith, please feel free to read this book, but just realize it's co-authored and the "feel" differs.
