I have been a fan of Wilbur Smith and the Courtney family stories since the very beginning. Now he takes Saffron Meerbach née Courtney to the 1950s and the uprisings in Kenya against colonial rule. Saffron was raised in Kenya and her extended family includes members of the Massai. After surviving WWII, the idea that there could be further conflict in Kenya is heartbreaking to her. At the same time, those who fought with the King’s African Rifles have come home to life as it was before, with no rights for owning land in their own country. Smith sets the scene for what is to come and I look forward to more of the Courtney’s story.
