The Kiss Quotient was my first venture into the romance genre and I had no idea what to expect. Helen Hoang’s novel left me pleasantly surprised, yet not excited about reading more romance. I enjoyed many portions of the book but I also found an equal amount tedious.

The parts I enjoyed most included my introduction to Autism (specifically what was formerly Asperger’s) through the heroine, Stella, in an honest manner. The hero, Michael, also promotes consent in a refreshing way seldom seen in books. Unfortunately, the book drags on a little long and I was frustrated in the over-reliance on the “men don’t communicate about their feelings,” trope driving the novel’s conflict. Maybe I’m too cynical for romance literature? But with such strong themes and characters in the book, I found the conflict disappointing. Overall, I think of The Kiss Quotient as my solid but flawed introduction to the romance genre.
