Thank you BookishFirst and Saga Press for providing the ARC for review.

Kingdom of Liars by Nick Martell is the debut novel in the planned fantasy series "Legacy of the Mercenary Kings". This first installment is a hefty read, at 596 pages in ARC.

The novel introduces us to our protagonist, Michael Kingsman, born to nobility but at the beginning of the novel we find him a petty thief on trial for murdering the king.

For a high fantasy novel with the premise of memory being the cost of magic, I was expecting more in terms of world building. The story threw the reader in to the world, without any background information or devices set up to explain what is going on or how the magic system here works.

Things moved pretty slow the entire first half of the book or so, but once the story picked up it drew me in. I find myself looking forward to the next book, and look forward to immediate action to jump right back in to the world.
