I had high expectations for this debut fantasy but it did not fit the bill for me. I had the opportunity to listen to this on audio. The narration itself is fine but I wasn't able to get lost in this world.

The world-building left a lot to be desired and almost felt like it was created as the plot progressed. The magic system is not fleshed out well. Honestly, when it comes to the magic element it is more an echo in the background that is mentioned occasionally when the main character refocuses on it. There really isn't much development to immerse you in that part of the novel. There are interesting scenarios occurring like the shattered moon that rains down on the city, the political secrets and immortal men. There just isn't enough to tie anything together and leave the reader with a sense of understanding. Even the characters left me with no connection as the story closed.

I do think there is a lot of potential for this world. There are strong themes of family, corrupt royals and mercenaries. More detail and background will go a long way with this up and coming world.
