I like the premise of magic's price being one's memories. I always like the idea of magic use having some kind of price; it's a little boring when characters can just DO all sorts of cool powerful magic Just Because. I was confused by what was going on in the First Impression, but maybe it makes more sense as the book goes on. I would pick up the book based on the blurb and the cover, but the excerpt just left me scratching my head a little.
