I loved this! We start at the end (very Tarantino) and then jump to the beginning of the story. The book follows Michael Kingsman and how he ended up being tried for murdering the king. Apparently his father befell a similar fate when executed for murdering the prince. Michael is a con artist, struggling to survive after his father’s death. In a world of magic and falling bits of moon, he uses what he can. Empty pistols and a sucker to be lured into a duel. Unfortunately it was his own presence in the king’s chamber while coated in blood and holding a pistol that really cinched the murder charge.

I really enjoyed this excerpt. The writing style is very plain and straightforward, but it still has a quality that lures you in and keeps you. The story itself is captivating. I want to know more. Why didn’t he speak at his trial? What did his family do for Hollow? How did he end up in that room with the king? Because although he is a con man, he seems innocent. His voice is one of humble indignation. There is some bitterness, but it is not corrosive. He is accepting if not deserving of his fate. Considering he knows all about cons, I think he was duped. It would certainly explain the resignation. Now I just need to know how!
