I read a short excerpt of Kingdom of Exiles and couldn't stop thinking about it. I was thrilled to receive an ARC copy in the mail and dove right in to finish. Maxym M. Martineau has crafted an amazing, unique tale of captivating characters in a fantastic world.
Leena is a Charmer - a person who can tame and then call beasts through a portal to help her in a variety of ways. She's been exiled from her home by an unscrupulous Council member and must find a way to clear her name. Unfortunately she also has to survive, so has resorted to selling beasts - an unforgivable crime for a Charmer. She encounters Noc and his band of assassins who a strike bargain with her. A beast for each of them and in return they will help Leena to procur a legendary beast to help her clear her name.
The group travels through a variety of exotic regions and encounter all kinds of creatures. They grow closer as they learn more about each other. There is an undeniable attraction between Noc and Leena but he's unable to act on it. The Assassins are a brotherhood of different characters - each very well-written and fun to read. Leena was approachable and very realistic. I really missed them when I finished the story.
