Keynan Masters and the Peerless Magic Crew by DaVaun Sanders is the story of Keynan Masters, a boy who lives in a co-op called Bizzy Block in a futuristic dystopian world where cars and music are a thing of the past and storms threaten the lives and safety of the community. When Keynan gets the opportunity to attend Peerless Academy, his family is thrilled at the opportunity, but Keynan is much less so. Eventually, Keynan finds himself at Peerless Academy along with new friends Leah, Amari, Ian, and Dez, and discovers that there's a whole lot more to the world than what he knows.

This was a fun middle grade book about a young boy discovering secrets and uncovering conspiracies at his new school. I enjoyed the magic system and watching Keynan step into his own as he grew more confident in his skills as a poet, as well as watching Keynan, Leah, Amari, Ian, and Dez come together as a crew. While there was a lot of world building, there was also a lot of confusion that could turn some younger readers off. I kept having to reread to understand what exactly was going on, and I'm still not sure if I get it. I hope that with the next book, these gaps and confusions are addressed, as I'm excited to see where this series goes!
