the start of the book was great — it kept me on my toes, wondering about what in the world was going on with keynan’s parents, the storms, and the drone. the middle of the book, unfortunately, was where i was lost. perhaps it was the amount of characters thrown at me, with not ample enough time to know and connect with them, or just generally not enough time spent building the atmosphere of peerless academy. the end of the book is where my hopes picked up a bit, as it ended with an awesome cliffhanger to the question i wanted to know from the start, regarding kenyan’s parents behaviors. that cliffhanger was delightfully unexpected.

i’m not sure if i wasn’t a huge fan because i may not be the right audience or if the world and character building were really as lackluster as i believed them to be. in this sense, though, i believe this series as a whole has potential to be better than my experience with the first book, as a series would give more time for readers to properly sink into the world.
