I think Keynan Masters and the Peerless Magic Crew would be a great addition to any middle grade shelf. The main character's emphasis on poetry and rhyming are a great choice for the target age category. Writing like that could easily be derided as not being masculine enough for a young boy, but making it the favorite pastime of a magic hero helps combat that. It could also be a connection point for kids interested in rap music. Finding friends and forming strong bonds with them will be a perennially solid theme for middle grade books, which this book accomplishes. The language is solidly written for the target audience. I, an adult, sometimes read young adult and middle grade, and I'm glad the author isn't trying to cater to those of us who are older and read "down." Too many books age up in terms of content or language beyond their true intended readers, but not this one.
