Maya, Ryder, and Jeanie have each lost someone, and that someone has set up his will to draw them back together. They also each react to the loss in different ways. Maya and Jeanie (stepdaughter/stepmother) have a long history of not getting along, and no one seems to be paying attention to high schooler Ryder, who ends up falling in with the wrong crowd.

Maya also has some problems at work. Despite years of hard work and dedication, she is passed over for a promotion. This felt very realistic, but I wanted a little bit more from this storyline than Maya quitting her job and setting up her own firm - I wanted a bit of justice for her!

I really liked this book. All of the characters had their own issues, and I liked how they were all resolved. The book also dealt with race issues, since Maya and her deceased father are black, and Ryder and Jeanie are white.
