I went into this book not really sure what to expect other than that the judge was dead and that three women would be trying to pick up the pieces of what he left behind. The first thing that I really noticed about this book is the conversational style of the writing. I found this to be really appealing and also liked the little quips and moments of humor tossed about through the book. My personal favorite was a reference that a couple of characters made to the character Celie in the Color Purple. The imagery to go along with this made it even more amusing.

The one thing that was off putting at times was the incessant need to identify the race of the characters. I could understand this for explanation purposes especially because the judge had a white wife and daughter along with his biological daughter. The dynamic would be different, however I felt it became a bit divisional in regards to the plot. Otherwise, this book was good and I am glad I took the time to read it after I had passed it by a few times. Thanks for the ARC, Goodreads.
