What caught my attention is the fact that you have a blended family, in more than one way, having to interact after their patriarch passes. Coming from a blended family myself, it gives me something to relate to. Anything that I can relate to through experience or just interest will always draw my attention.
In regards to the cover, the color catches my eye and would draw me in if walking by it at the bookstore. And I like the fact that you know your dealing with mix races right from the get-go instead of finding out through character descriptions later in the book.
