Having read the first two chapters of the Judge’s Girls I felt an immediate connection to the characters whose lives have been upended by their husband’s and father's demise. He was clearly the strongest and most authoritative figure in their midst and their death hits them hard.
The grieving widow cannot bring herself out of the alcohol dependence she developed, apparently neglecting her daughter that needs her the most at this crucial junction. The roles seem to switch, as the daughter becomes the caretaker for the non-functioning parent, and that will surely make readers emphasize with this family’s predicament.
The older daughter of the judge is also in pain, while trying to hold on to her career and help her family at the same time.
I felt that even a few pages in, I started rooting for this family and hoping they will be able to rise about the grief and pain.
