Ruta Sepetys is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors of our time and I Must Betray You may be her best work. Her characters are dynamic and inspiring. Much like her other novels, she selected a subject matter that is not well covered, but so deserving of global attention. I Must Betray You also could not have had a more timely release as protests and demonstrations of civil disobedience are increasing around the world in response to draconian mandates and laws. I greatly appreciate that Sepetys chose to write this story from the perspective of teenagers. I think many young adults will be encouraged and empowered by these characters.
While reading I Must Betray You I was reminded of George Orwell's 1984. However, unlike that classic, Sepetys work is based on facts and history, and not fantasy and conjecture. I think I Must Betray You could replace 1984 on suggested reading lists in the near future.
