Ruta Sepetys will always be my goto historical fiction YA novelist because she somehow brings out of the secrets of history in a flourish of honesty and emotion. I'm always blown away. This novel has definitely convinced me that I need to go back to The Fountains of Silence because I'm just craving MORE.
I Must Betray You follows an aspiring writer, and I always find these sorts of novels to be a sucker punch since I— myself— wish to be a writer. This gave me a signficant amount of flashbacks to The Nightingale specifically since Cristian is very much in the trenches of the rebellion and war. It's a wonderful comparison, and I'm excited to now have a somewhat YA version of a beloved adult historical fiction.
Overall, I loved getting to learn more about Romania. I'm in love with anything related to Russian history, so getting to see firsthand their influence and toxicity during the Communism of the 20th century on Eastern European countries was powerful. I'll always ask all my friends to read more of these sorts of books.
