This historical fiction novel follows Christian, a seventeen year old living in communist Romania. Christian is blackmailed by the government to be an informant on his neighbors and friends. Christian decides to use his situation to undermine the government. It is full of historical details. I enjoyed learning about a period in history that I knew nothing about. The writing sucked me in and I couldn't put it down. I was fully invested in all of the characters and needed to see what happened to them. This book is a YA book and sometimes did feel like it. I wish it would have given more details in some places. It felt like it was trying to keep the storyline censored in some places.
I highly recommend this book if you enjoy historical fiction or just want to learn more about this time period. This was my first book by Ruta Sepetys and I cant wait to read her backlist books.
