Ruta Sepetys is the master of YA historical fiction! This was such a powerful book, and as a YA librarian I will definitely be sharing it with the teen at my library. This is a historical fiction set in communist era Romania. We follow seventeen year old inspiring author Christian, who is blackmailed by the secret police into becoming an informant. He uses the opportunity to try and undermine the corrupt government and help the revolutionary efforts of the rebellion. Sepetys has such a way of writing these events, which are so hard to visualize as the everyday person, and really puts us in the shoes of these characters. The scenes are so vivid, emotional, and powerful. This book had me on the edge of my seat, as her past novels had. I will always recommend her books to historical fiction lovers. I really admire her work and already cannot wait to see more from her!
