I finished this book three days ago and I still cannot stop thinking about it. I cannot believe I did not know anything about communism in Romania before reading this book.
This book was so beautifully written. It was poetic and extremely raw throughout and I loved how the characters age and innocence led him to be more questioning of the regime. I cannot imagine what it is like to grow up in the conditions as the characters mentioned. It was so painful realizing that little things we take for granted in the US would be such a delicacy to them that they couldn't even imagine it being real.
Knowing this book was YA before going into it, I was totally not expecting the violence depicted during the fall of communism but I am very happy with it!
I'm not a huge historical fiction reader but I will without a doubt be reading the rest of Ruta Sepetys' books.
