It is the late 1980s in Romania and communist dictator Nicolai Ceauscescue has the citizens of the country under constant surveillance. Everything is owned my the party and peie have to wait in line for hours to get a few scraps of expired food to bring home to share with their families. Conditions in Romania are deplorable and no one can speak out for fear of their neighbors being spies. No one can be trusted. But a revolution is brewing. In this story We follow Cristian, a 17 year old Romanian boy who is coerced into becoming an informer. Cristian has a plan to outsmart the agent who turned him and hopefully make a difference in his country.
This was such a well written story that had me hooked from the beginning. The chapters are short and kept me wanting to turn the page to find out what happened next. What is so shocking is that this happened so recently. We think of these terrible events as being far in the past but this really wasn't that long ago. And while the characters are fictional, they give us a glimpse of what it was like to be a Romanian during this time. Highly recommend!
