Many thanks to BookishFirst for the ARC! Ruta Sepetys is one of my favorite authors for the sheer fact that she finds pieces of history that aren’t well known and brings them to light. I was nervous when I received this book as it takes place in 1989, a mere 33 years ago - not really historical fiction in my mind but this book was absolutely amazing. The book follow Cristian, a 17 year boy who lives with his parents, sister, and grandfather in an apartment that is very small. He is asked to spy on the American diplomats his mother works for - giving the police information on the father and son. That’s where his problems start and the book only continues from there. I had a knot in my stomach the entire time I was reading but this book was so good. I didn’t want this book to end and am curious to see what happens, especially with the somewhat cliffhanger ending. I was pleasantly surprised to see a character from one of Ruta’s other book that had a pretty big part in this book. Highly, highly recommend this book!!
