Every time I start a Ruta Sepetys book, I know she is going to completely immerse me into a time in history that is often overlooked. Even with her WWII books, she manages to find a portion of history to talk about that is not given nearly enough attention in the historical fiction genre. "I Must Betray You" is no different, diving into much more recent history with a focus on Romania as the country is on the brink of their break from communism. She artfully examines the system of informers put in place with the government and builds tension throughout as she carefully illustrates the illusion of the total control and fear put in place among the communities.

Her writing style and quick chapters keeps the reader totally engrossed, and makes it nearly impossible to find a place where you can take a break! Sepetys is an auto-buy author for me, and her latest book only confirms her place as my favorite historical fiction author! It is also worth noting that although her books are marketed as YA, they really do not read that way at all! Perfect for both young and old readers.
