When I saw that Ruta Sepetys was coming out with a new book, I knew I had to read it. This is the 4th book I've read from her, and two of them have been 5 stars. The last one I read from her, The Fountains of Silence, and this one are the ones that didn't make it to my favorite list. I can't decipher whether it's because I just didn't enjoy these ones as much or if it's because my reading tastes have changed. Either way I still think she is an amazing author. Her writing style is one of my favorites. It's easy to read and yet very impactful. You can tell the amount of time and love she puts into what she writes.

It wasn't that I didn't like this book because I did. It's just that I wasn't as engaged or intrigued with the story as I have been with some of her other ones. I found the pacing to be a bit slow but it was made up for by the fact that it was so easy to fly through this book. At one point I read 90 pages in one night, which never happens for me. That definitely counts for something.

When I saw that this book was going to be about spies in a communist country, I was very interested about what was in store. However, I was a bit let down. There were aspects of mystery to it, but not as much as I had hoped for, and the mystery that was there I wasn't gripped by.

One of the positive things I can say is that Ruta Sepetys definitely knows how to write an ending. It felt fulfilling and had an air of finality to it that was satisfactory. Overall, it was a great book that touched on an important event in history that I think more people should learn about. I'm glad that Ruta Sepetys gave me the chance to learn about it too.
