Historical Fiction is one of my favorite genres, so I was looking forward to reading the "first impression" of this novel. "I Must Betray You", by Ruta Sepetys did not disappoint! The story had me captivated from the first paragraph. Ms. Sepetys does an amazing job of describing the main character, Cristian Florescu, a seventeen year old student, that is forced to spy on an American family that his mother works for. Ms. Sepetys, also does a wonderful job of describing the setting of 1989 Romania. Through her words, I could envision the streets, shops and apartments of Romania.
The "first impression" ends with Cristian feeling guilty for what he sees as a betrayal to his sister, family, and friends. Will he simply spy and report back to Securitate, or will he double-cross them?
I can't wait to read the remainder of this novel!!
Based on my first impression of "I Must Betray You", I am also looking forward to reading additional novels by Ms. Sepetys!
