"I Must Betray You" takes place in 1980s Romania and follows a teen named Cristian, who is blackmailed by the communist secret police to spy on his American diplomat neighbors in exchange for medicine for his dying grandfather. It's a lot, I know, but Ruta Sepetys is a master of her craft and of her genre - young adult historical fiction - so these first few chapters feel anything but overwhelming. Short sentences, short chapters, and a relatable male protagonist give readers a lot to work with, and Sepetys perfectly balances context and exposition with the initiating action, with appropriate touches of double-crossing and espionage. I can tell this one's going to be intense. Can't wait to read the entire thing!
