I'm SO bummed that I missed out on claiming Ruta's new book with my points! I absolutely adore this woman's writing. I first fell in love with this author when reading Between Shades of Gray a few years ago, and since then I automatically purchase everything she writes. My favorite part of her writing is that she delves into periods of time in our history that are not well known by the public. The same is true with her newest work, I Must Betray You.

In contrast to some of her previous works of historical fiction, this one in particular is hitting a little closer to home as it is set in 1989 - only a few decades ago and within my lifetime. Sepetys has a way with words that makes you feel like you're sitting in this timeframe, and it's exacerbated by the fact that this unsettling piece of history was only 32 years ago. I can read this from the main character's eyes (Cristian), and imagine my father in his place if we were in a different life.

At this point in time, Romania was under constant surveillance and dictatorship in communism. Our main character compares the Dictator, Nicolae Ceauşescu, to Dracula. We start the story with Cristian being forced into spy work in order to keep his family safe and provide medicine to his suffering grandfather.

I'm so excited to dive into another new novel from Ruta Sepetys, especially one that is set in recent history to dive into what life with communism is like. Her writing style just has a way of completely hooking you in, and I'm ready to be transported!
