I have always loved Ruta’s books - and this one is no different. She always writes about little known bits of historical times and creates fantastic books for YA fiction. This book follows Cristian as he lives in Romania during 1989. He has broken the law and now must turn spy for the Romanians in exchange for medicine for his ailing grandfather. In the pages read, I fear Cristian may be over his head but knowing Ruta’s writing, he’ll come out victorious in the end - though I fear he’ll be in for a lot of turmoil and fear as he navigates his new life. I don’t know much about Romania in the 1980s but my curiosity has been piqued and I’m looking forward to learning more about the conditions and life for Romanians during this time. Absolutely cannot wait to finish reading this and see where Cristian’s story goes.
