The cover reminds me of when the Berlin Wall fell and the Soviet Union was collapsing, a very formative period for me. There is both a bleakness and a hopefulness conveyed.
The beginning of the book is very descriptive and immediately drew me into these characters. A torn child, a feisty grandfather, a frightened bird of a mother, a budding romance, a sister who has been "inspected" to see if she's bearing a child, a completely controlling state (yes, this is a character).
I'll purchase this book when it's released if I don't get a review copy.
