The book seems to suffer from the idea that women have to be different from most girls in order to be special, and does tell a bit rather than show the effects of censorship and thought policing in Romania. However, the aloof voice and steady pacing drew me into the story immediately and I would love to see where it goes. The author seems to know her history and I'm a sucker for historical fiction, so I can't wait to read this story about a not often written about place!
