Fascinating setting but dislike the writing style

I'm always fascinated by and drawn to historical fiction that teaches me about another country other than my own. 1980s Romania, then, where this book is set, immediately drew me in. However, I find the author's writing style to be too abrupt and melodramatic. I'll pass on this book, but others who love a dramatic political thriller may enjoy it.
