I'm quite aware that Romania is pretty much the poorest country in Europe--and I guess that is largely or entirely the fault of the infamous reign of Nicolae Ceaușescu. The dark betrayals, paranoia, and government repression of this period in Romania's history certainly have more pertinence in an era when approximately 40% of Americans are pushing for out-and-out extremist right-wing fascism and literally hate democracy.
