I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest and voluntary opinion, review, and rating.

The beginning of the book made me feel like the author was trying to blurt out every fact about every horror movie and trope ever. I found myself thinking “Yes, we know, the scary movies,” every few paragraphs. Once I got past the first three or four chapters, though, it was easier to read.

The meat of this book kept me on the edge of my seat (or bed, as that’s where I read every night), and when I had to put it down to go to sleep, I found myself itching to read more and find out what would happen next. Throughout the book I kept thinking “Okay, I think it’s actually this person that’s the murderer,” (trying to not be totally shaken by the twist because I knew there would be one) but I was wrong still. The secrets revealed during the main part of the book took me by surprise (maybe I’m just naive).

The worst part of this book, however, was the end. I was ready for an ending that was clear, showed growth from the main character, Alice, and wrapped the story up. I got none of that. I kept turning the pages back and forth trying to figure out if I missed something. If this was going to have a sequel, I’d happily mark it 4.5 or 5 stars. But, it’s marketed as a standalone and I was left feeling just…empty.

I enjoyed reading the book; I really really did. But the ending just sucked all the life and enjoyment from the experience. A sequel would make this so much better.
