How To Survive Your Murder is a slasher horror novel that takes the classic elements of horror and flips it on its head with the sci-fi/fantasy element of time travel. In this story, Alice, who is a major fan of horror movies, finds herself back in time to the night of her sister’s murder, which she witnessed a year ago. There, she has the opportunity to find out what really happened and to potentially stop the murder itself and save her sister. As we all know from any and all time travel stories, changing the past can have devastating consequences on the future. I was really drawn to this premise and got a kick out of the nineties horror movie references even though I’m not a huge horror fan myself. If you are a fan of Scream and the like, this book is for you! This book is also for you if you enjoy the classic horror tropes and tons of plot twists.
The twists kept me guessing and were a lot of fun, but there were some very convenient explanations for elements that felt like easy plot devices. Some were understandably predictable because of the genre, but there were definitely surprises as well. Overall, it was a really fun, fast-paced read. I would recommend it for fans of horror, especially as we get closer to spooky season.
