Danielle Valentine's horror novel, How to Survive Your Murder, follows Alice Lawrence, a self-proclaimed horror movie-guru, as she witnesses her sister's murder, her life one year later, and then in a very creepy "It's a Wonderful Life"-esque twist is sent back in time to see what would had happened if her sister was not murdered and she instead has until midnight to figure out if the killer is really who she thought.

The goal of the book is to act like The Final Girl in the classic horror movies, and I enjoyed the allusions throughout, especially heavy references to Scream. The book is fun and sets it up as a quick read, leaving the reader wanting to turn the page and see what happens next.

I didn't love the ending, but I also get why it works for this book. It almost feels like a cliffhanger but isn't - I know what happened but the why is still nebulous for me.

True to the inspiration for the book, I think this would have worked well on screen and is a fun "Spooky Season" read.
