Alice Lawrence, horror movie fanatic, sadly lived through her own horror movie the night she saw her sister killed. It doesn’t help that she was the only witness to the crime, and knows who did it. Her sister Claire was the all-American teen, pretty and popular, so its no surprise that the trial of her killer, Owen Trevor Maddox, is drawing a lot of attention, including the attentions of some who think she may be confused about who the killer really is. As Alice prepares to tell the court what she saw she is knocked out, waking up to find it is now one year ago, the day her sister was killed, and Alice has until midnight to save her sister and uncover the truth.

This novel reminded me of It’s A Wonderful Life a little; Alice gets to see what would happen if events–Claire’s death–took a different course and the effects of those changes. Will the change bring with it something good or something bad? Or could the consequences be a little of both? Alice is a tough girl and I enjoyed her strength and perseverance. The descriptions of the characters, events and settings paint a complete picture of the narrative, which was easy to follow as well. How to Survive Your Murder is a novel adults and young adults can enjoy, and its a great stepping stone for young adults who enjoy horror but aren’t ready for more serious ones. This was a great page-turner that kept me guessing.

Whether you are young or old, or just the right age, How to Survive Your Murder is fun read that I recommend.
