This book is perfect for middle graders who love magical stories that involve animals. Set in Positano on the Amalfi coast, Giada is a twelve year old girl who is breaking her family’s magical tradition of being healers of people by focusing on being a “magical veterinarian”. Her parents and brother, Rocco are not on board with her decision until she proves her skills while saving their lives.
I found the book to be an enjoyable and quick paced read and a nice break from the “adult” books that I usually read. Having the hero be a young girl is so refreshing and inspiring, especially for young female readers. Giada is so fun and likable but also serious, strong and brave. The animals, both real and imaginary add so much to the story and I think young readers will really enjoy them. I’m not sure what is in the future for Giada but this book definitely ended in a manner that set it up as a series starter. Hopefully, the author will share more adventures with Giada!
