First book I've read by this author, I am a historic book reader and this takes place 1861-1866 set in Key West, FL and Havana Cuba during the civil war. I actually enjoyed the story and the characters in this book. It describes the relationship between Everett and the family history of slavery. You get attached to some of the characters struggle and showed the challenges that a war can have on people. Everett in our story is only 22 but the character is wise because of what he has gone thru and the challenging life experiences and current struggles. I enjoyed the descriptive details of the landscape and at times felt as if I were in Florida and Havana, it is so beautifully written. You get the feelings of hope by the characters and are happy that Emma brings out Everett in their romance; this is a change from his guarded personality. The cover is perfect for the story.
