This novel is a fascinating story about American and Cuban history. The fictional story starts when Everett Townsend and his crew are caught in a hurricane and witness a shipwreck in the Marquesas Keys. When they investigate, they discover a locked cargo hold with the dead bodies of Black freedmen. When Townsend reports this unsettling incident to his commander, he’s encouraged to drop the matter. Townsend can’t shake his suspicions that the bodies from the cargo hold were destined for re-enslavement in the sugar fields of Cuba.

Overall, I think the book shows a lesser-known horror from Black History. I appreciate the level of research and dedication that went in to telling this story. That being said, there were parts where I felt that the dialogue was awkward, or some characters were not fully developed. I also did not fully understand the necessity behind the romance between Everett and Emma.

I think this is a great read if you like historical non-fiction, or want to learn more about the reality for many slaves post-Civil War.
