This story starts on October22 1865 when we are introduced to Navy Lieutenant Everett Townsend . A young man still haunted by the horrors of the Civil War and the death of his best friend Clyde Hendricks. Returning from a supply mission from The Dry Totugas to Key West he and his crew are caught in a hurricane. They take refuge in the Mangroves in the Marquesas Keys. The next morning while looking at the damage to theUss Rebecca he spots The wreck of the ship Hard Times. Boarding the ship he discovered that the crew abandoned the ship leaving 10 men to perish in the hold. One man is still alive though badly injured Thaddeus Burrell tells Townsend that he and nine others were kidnapped. Though Thaddeus passes away shortly after Townsend is determined to find the evil men who did this.The army soon sends him to Cuba to investigate the murder of an American sailor and the kidnapping of freedmen. Townsend follows the twisted clues to his grandmother’s plantation in Cuba while also trying to reconnect with the woman he loved before the war. Soon he will have to choose between his grandmother and his love and helping Cuba free itself from Spain. Taking The reader from the lush Mangroves of Florida to a Cuba on the brink of revolution you will devour every word as you are taken with Townsend on his perilous journey.
