I ended up not finishing this book because I really was not feeling it at all. I like historical fiction, but I felt this book was filled with a lot of sailor jargon that I really wasn’t interested in and a lot I, quite frankly, didn’t understand. I even had a difficult time getting a real sense of who the characters were because it seemed so focused on the ships. They felt flat to me and not exactly real.
I wouldn’t recommend this book to most people, I think. Unless you feel like slogging through the jargon, I don’t know that anyone would actually enjoy reading this. That being said, if the history of the Florida keys AND the history of boats and sailing is your thing you might enjoy it. The prose wasn’t all that bad, the story was just difficult for me to get into and follow because boats and sailing really aren’t my thing. I clearly was not the intended audience for this.
