This excerpt gives us a glimpse of the tensions encountered during the rebuilding of the south right after the Civil War. I knew a little about the prison on the Dry Tortugas but nothing about what it must have been like traveling by ship to and from the island in the 1860s. Interesting historical fiction with a mystery to solve around the shipwreck discovered in the first few chapters.
