Robin Lloyd's novel, The Hidden Cargo, seems like an engaging blend of historical fiction, adventure, and romance (there is a strong hint that the remaining part of the story will go deeper into Everett and Emma’s relationship).

Everett Townsend has a complex backstory, and even though he is only twenty-two years old, he appears to be much older and more mature, probably as a product of his challenging life experiences. Through his internal monologues, readers gain insight into his hidden feelings, current struggles, and glimpses of hope for the future.

This well-crafted tale explores the aftermath of the Civil War, slavery, and the fight for freedom. The scene where Everett finds Thaddeus and nine other Black men locked in the shipwreck was especially hard to read (not because it’s badly written, of course, it’s just hard to think about all the horrific evil people are capable of committing against each other).

“Tollman was the one who broke the silence. ‘Looks lak Lucifer himself bin heah. Brought in a whole mess of hell and evil with dat storm.’ The dead man’s face stared up at Townsend. The eyes were no longer moist, but dry and flat like sunbaked mud. ‘I don’t know, Tollman. I’m not sure about Lucifer, but I think you’re right about hell and evil.’”

I am eager to learn more about Emma, as she appears to be such an intriguing and enigmatic character. I am also looking forward to Everett and Emma’s reunion; it seems that Everett keeps most of his emotions hidden from others, so this side of the story would be a nice contrast to that.

I love the cover design – color scheme, imagery, and font choice, it all captures the essence of the historical fiction genre! The inclusion of the maps at the beginning of the story is a great addition too! I am a big history fan, so I was really excited to read the First Look, (wish it was a bit longer, but that’s just me being curious and wanting to know what happens next) and would love to finish the rest of this emotional and gripping story!
