The blurb didn't match up with what I read in the excerpt, so I'm not really clear on what the book is really about except "a dark family secret." The except started off with a pretty intriguing storyline and some insight into Zimbabwe life. The prose wasn't phenomenal, but it wasn't terrible. However, when the POV switched to Marina and her describing masturbation, it lost me. First, Marina's POV definitely felt more like how a man would describe it, which is no surprise since the author is male. I'm not saying a man can't write a female POV and visa-versa, but in this case, it didn't work. Combined with the so-so writing and this is a pass for me.

I like the cover from the excerpt better than the one shown on BookishFirst.
