Harare Voices and Beyond provided insight into the Zimbabwe legal and penal system that was unexpected and similarly dark to the American counterparts. Based on the cover of the book, I had assumed that the protagonist would be female and had trouble realizing Rhys was male for several pages. The switch to Marina was unexpected and I'm not sure it's necessary. I'm definitely interested in know more about Julian's murder, Marina's backstory, and the ultimate fate of Rhys and his mother but hoping that the whole book is more in the present that the past.
