Donna Florio, a lifelong resident of Bank Street in Greenwich Village in Manhattan, presents an overview of the street, the neighborhood, and her life. The book is divided into character portraits of various neighbors, from the parents of her childhood best friend to Sid Vicious.
I appreciated how well Donna seemed to know all of her neighbors, and how all of the neighbors came together to support each other. I also appreciated how she was able to gather so many stories about so many of the Bank Street residents, and how well she described everyone, eccentrics and all.
However, for me, this book didn't really gel. I had trouble following it at times, as we jumped from character to character. I think I would have appreciated more of a continuing storyline, and less of a "people Donna knows on Bank Street" short story feeling to be book.
