I grew up in NYC, so Greenwich Village wasn't very far away geographically. But it was a world away culturally from the conservative, quotidian life I led in another NY neighborhood. As a teenager I yearned to go to the Village and immerse myself in Village life, which I imagined must be a riot of creativity and freedom.

The cover shows two red-brick buildings. I lived in a red-brick house until I went off to college, so the image brings me back to those times. My neighborhood also had its characters: some kindly, some frightening to small children, some friends, and some who shunned friendship.

I've left NY but I haven't fully forgotten the aura of the Village, so I'd like to read what an insider has to say about her neighborhood.
