Unique YA Novel
Going Places manages to avoid the typical arc that many young adult books seem to follow. Kathryn Berla captures the crossroads of a senior in high school well and explores unique relationships beyond romantic ones (the interactions with elderly characters are particularly strong). I enjoyed the main character, Hudson's, quirks, unusual interests, and business ideas. The plot is a bit slow at times but the strong characters make up for the pacing. The book is enjoyable overall, but the ending is a bit disappointing. Without providing spoilers, some of the plot points at the end are a departure from the tone and feel of the rest of the book, though Berla does tie up the loose ends. Still, this is a quick and enjoyable read.
